U.S. Navy reports the violation of international law.
The U.S. Navy 5th Fleet reported that Iran has seized a foreign vessel in the Gulf of Oman.
“The oil tanker issued a distress call during the seizure,” the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet said. “Iran‘s actions are contrary to international law and disruptive to regional security and stability. Iran should immediately release the oil tanker.”
The Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker had departed Kuwait and was transiting the Gulf of Oman. The final destination was Houston, Texas. According to the Navy, a distress call was issued by the vessel around 1:45 p.m. when it was seized by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran.
The 5th Fleet stated, “Iran’s continued harassment of vessels and interference with navigational rights in regional waters are a threat to maritime security and the global economy.”
The 5th Fleet, located in Bahrain, stated that they are “monitoring the situation.”
